The Youth Hostels in the Rhineland (DJH Rheinland) provide free teaching materials for school classes learning German as a foreign language (DaF). The two workbooks, „Experience Germany – Youth Hostels“ and „From the Youth Hostel to the City“, help teachers worldwide to prepare for a school trip to Germany in terms of both language and content, and to make further use of the learning material during and after the stay.
Discover youth hostels, using the DJH City-Hostels Rhineland as an example.
The first workbook introduces pupils to the concept of youth hostels in Germany. Using the modern DJH City Hostels in Cologne and Düsseldorf as examples, pupils learn about the typical facilities, procedures and special features of these accommodation options.
These resources are ideal for preparing lessons for a school trip to the DJH Rheinland youth hostels.
From the youth hostel into the city – learning through a real-life urban experience.
The second workbook focuses on exploring the city. The City Hostels in Cologne and Düsseldorf, the Bonn Youth Hostel, the Duisburg Sports Youth Hostel and the Duisburg Landschaftspark Youth Hostel serve as starting points for authentic city explorations.
In this way, the DJH Rheinland combines language tuition with real-life cultural experiences that can be enjoyed right there on the spot.
The free DJH workbooks have been specially developed for German as a foreign language (DaF) lessons and complement international textbooks. They are suitable for use before, during and after a school trip to Germany and, depending on the language level, can also be used in classes with beginners or advanced learners.
All content is provided by the Rhineland Regional Association of the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH Rhineland):
The teaching materials offer free added value for teachers planning a school trip to Germany. As the activities are specifically tailored to the DJH City Hostels and youth hostels in the Rhineland, they are ideal for school groups who are staying there and wish to actively practise German as a foreign language at the same time.
This workbook for „German as a Foreign Language“ lessons is a follow-up to the workbooks „Discover Germany – Youth Hostels“, which focuses primarily on the topic of youth hostels in general, and „From the Youth Hostel into the City“, which centres on opportunities for „exploring the city“ based on the DJH City Hostels in the Rhineland.
The third workbook focuses on integrating topics from the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology into German as a Foreign Language (DaF) lessons. In this way, subject-specific knowledge is combined with subject-related and general language skills, as well as the development of language skills in German as a foreign language, and all of this is presented in an engaging manner.
